The Elizabethans

The British Depth study of the Elizabethans focuses on a short time span when the nation was under severe pressure and faced the possibility or actual experience of invasion. The point of this study is to understand the complexity of society and the inter-play of different forces within it. You also need to know how and why historians and others have interpreted the same events and developments in different ways.

You need to understand the interplay between different forces in society, such as political, religious, economic, social and cultural. You also need to pay special attention to this underlying issues - How and why late Elizabethan England has been interpreted as a 'golden age' and the reasons why this interpretation has been challenged. Lastly, you should study a range of different interpretations.

An overview of the topic and its four time periods are below to help you structure your revision. You should revise each time period equally and focus on the bullet points as issues which cross over-time periods.
